Local Heritage Places in Launceston in Launceston

A Launceston building can be protected locally, through a heritage code in the planning scheme, instead of on the State Register. What local heritage places in Launceston actually involves

The City defines local heritage as an item, whether a building, precinct, landscape, tree or archaeological site, which has significance to a local government area and its community. A local heritage precinct is a group of individual items or residences, and their settings or streetscapes, significant as a collective. The City says its local list is kept in the Launceston Local Provisions Schedule of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme.

What the code is aiming at

The State Planning Office describes the Local Historic Heritage Code's aim as being sympathetic to the scale and form of the site or precinct, and using building materials that match the appearance of the heritage place. It also says the code does not apply to a place entered on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.

Maintenance and major works

The City says maintenance works are usually exempt from the development application process, and points to Section C6.4 of the State Planning Provisions (Local Historic Heritage Code) for the full list of exemptions. It does not say whether a plastering repair is maintenance. Whether yours is, is for the City to say before the work starts.

This site does not say that any Launceston street or address is in a local list or precinct. The City can say which list, if any, an address is on. The suburbs page shows the one precinct we found a source for, and that it is only proposed.
