How to check a Launceston building's heritage status before you ask for a plaster quote

By Artigellence ·

Ask Heritage Tasmania whether the building is on the Tasmanian Heritage Register and the City of Launceston whether it is in the local list, before you ask anyone to price plaster. The LIST layer shows 617 Register entries with a Launceston address, counted on 6 October 2026, but it is not the Register, and it cannot answer for your address. The Heritage plastering costs and rules check lists each line with its source.

Why the order matters

Heritage Tasmania says a person must not carry out any works to a place entered on the Tasmanian Heritage Register unless the Heritage Council approves them. A provider's quote that was written before anyone asked that question may describe a job that cannot start as written.

The LIST, Tasmania's public mapping service, carries a layer of Register entries. Counted on 6 October 2026, 617 entries have a Launceston address. The layer says it is a spatial representation of the Register and not a formal version of it, so use it to see that the question is common here, not to answer it.

The checks, in order

  1. Ask Heritage Tasmania about the Register

Heritage Tasmania encourages people to speak to one of its heritage advisers before lodging, and says the advice is free and may save time and money. Give them the address.

  2. Ask the City about its local list

The City of Launceston says its local heritage list is kept in the Launceston Local Provisions Schedule of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme. A building on the Register is under the State regime instead, because the local code does not apply to it.

  3. Say whether the work is inside or outside

The planning scheme treats exterior decoration as development and exempts internal works from a planning permit, and a building approval may still be needed. Tell both the City and the provider which you mean.

  4. Ask whether plaster counts as minor works

Heritage Tasmania's examples of minor works are removing non-significant fabric and painting. It does not name plastering on its Getting Approval page, so ask the adviser about your job.

  5. Pass on what you were told

Put the answers in the enquiry. A provider who knows the building is on the Register can write the quote to match the notes on existing finishes that an application has to carry.

What this does not tell you

None of these pages says who may do plastering work, and this site does not say. It also does not say any particular Launceston building is on a list. Read each body's current page before you rely on anything here: the figures were read on 6 October 2026.
